David Smith

Dave Smith joined EPA from the private sector, bringing over 20 years of deep technical experience, and is the technical and overall lead on the EPA Facility Registry Service (FRS) program. Upon taking over FRS, he began automating manual processes and implementing newer approaches and technologies. He lowered the cost of the FRS program by $600K per year while improving performance. He reinvested the resultant cost savings into innovation and development of new services and capabilities.

Dave also positioned FRS to advance multiple EPA and cross-governmental data efforts, such as supporting emergency preparedness and response, as well as data collection APIs providing significant burden reduction while improving data quality. Beyond FRS, he provides invaluable hands-on technical expertise to EPA programs as well as cross governmental initiatives.

Dave is passionate about using data for understanding and solving environmental challenges. His competence, humility, collaborative nature and good humor have energized his colleagues in many areas.
